Skin Barrier Balm – Ultra Pure

Net Weight: 2.5 oz (71 g)

A traditional, grass-fed beef tallow balm designed for harsh, dry weather — made to protect the skin barrier, reduce moisture loss, and stay on the skin instead of evaporating.

What This Is (and What It Isn’t)

This is a sealing balm, not a watery lotion. Most commercial lotions rely heavily on water and evaporate quickly, which can leave skin feeling dry again shortly after application.

This balm is designed to remain on the skin as a protective layer, helping slow trans epidermal water loss and creating a buffer between your skin and dry air, wind, frequent hand-washing, and cold-weather exposure.

Why I Made It

This formula was originally created for the dry, cold winters of coastal New England — when hands take constant abuse from washing, cold air, and low indoor humidity.

The goal was to make something more durable than a typical lotion — a balm that actually lasts on the skin and provides protection instead of disappearing.

Ingredients

  • Grass-fed beef tallow
  • Jojoba oil
  • Peppermint essential oil (peppermint version only)

Why Tallow

Beef tallow has been used for generations as a skin balm because it’s rich in stable, skin-compatible lipids and naturally contains small amounts of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K). Unlike water-based products, it forms a lasting barrier that helps protect the skin rather than rinsing or evaporating away.

Texture, Use & Expectations

This balm has a dense, butter-like consistency. A little goes a long way. Start with a very small amount, warm it between your fingers, and apply sparingly.

Using too much can leave a greasy feeling — this is normal for a true balm. It’s meant to be applied thinly as a protective layer, not rubbed in like a lotion.

Tallow balms are especially effective when used after washing, on slightly damp skin, or over a lighter moisturizer. In those cases, the balm helps seal in existing moisture and extend the effects of whatever was applied underneath.

How I Use It

One of my favorite uses is applying it to my hands before putting on kitchen gloves to do the dishes. It helps the gloves slide on more easily, and the warmth from the water softens the balm while keeping hands protected.

Peppermint & Unscented Options

Peppermint
Includes a small amount of steam-distilled peppermint essential oil (Mentha piperita) for a clean scent and light cooling sensation. Used sparingly — not as fragrance.

Unscented
Contains no essential oils and retains only the faint, natural aroma of filtered tallow. Best for sensitive skin or those who prefer no added scent.

Packaging

  • Wide-mouth glass jar for easy access
  • Screw-top lid for secure storage
  • Designed to be reused once finished

Notes

  • For external use only
  • Store at room temperature, away from direct heat
  • Discontinue use if irritation occurs
